Have you ever had that bloated feeling in your stomach during a workout? Chances are you ate too close to the start of your activity. Food that needs to be chewed has to go through your digestive track before it can be converted as glycogen to be used as energy. With this in mind, it is best to space your last meal about 2-3 hours before your workout, depending on how your body converts food. The less processed the food is, the quicker your body can digest it and the quicker it can be converted into glycogen stores. So avoid things like oily food, processed meats, fast food, etc before working out.
A good pre-workout snack is some fresh fruit and/or Buko juice (coconut water) taken about 2 hours before you start training. The more intense you expect your workout to be, the longer the gap should be between your last meal and the start of your workout.
