Butter vs. Margarine and My Butter Fried Rice Recipe

Here’s why you should be reaching for the butter instead of the margarine, as well as my all-time favorite fried rice recipe, flavored with shrimp, pork, and butter. What’s not to love?

The battle between butter and margarine has been going on for decades. Even health professionals join in on the debate from both sides, leaving regular people like us stumped. What’s the difference between margarine and butter, and does it matter?

Margarine is an artificially produced food made to mimic butter. It is primarily made of vegetable oil, but oftentimes artificial ingredients, emulsifiers, and colorants are added. This makes margarine a highly processed food. Some types of margarine undergo a hydrogenation process to extend shelf life and harden the oil, but this results in the production of trans-fats.

Butter is made purely from cow’s milk, and doesn’t have any additives or artificial ingredients mixed into it, making this an all-natural product. Anchor Butter comes from New Zealand milk cows, and they make sure that the milk used is pasteurized and hormone-free.

For most people who are aiming to live a healthier lifestyle, the fear of fat is strong. Cutting out fatty ingredients like oil, milk, cheese, and butter may seem like the healthy decision, but research shows that fat is an essential part of our diet. Instead of completely cutting out food groups from our lives, just consume in moderation. Our bodies need fat to survive, and there’s no better way to incorporate it in our diets than with a flavor-adding ingredient like butter. Everything is better with butter.

In this recipe, I make fried rice—a simple, no fuss dish that you can even make with leftovers, but this time I elevate it with some Anchor Butter. The butter just adds a bit of indulgence to the rice, bringing all the other ingredients together to make a hearty meal that’s bursting with flavor.

Recipe:

Ingredients

4 cups Jasmine rice
4 cloves garlic, minced
1/2 medium red or yellow onion, coarsely chopped (about 1/3 cup)
2-4 tbsps Anchor Butter
80 grams chopped pork

½ cup chopped shrimp
1 tbsp sweet soy sauce
1 tsp fish sauce

Salt
White pepper powder

1 egg

2 tbsp chili paste

Sesame oil

Scallions

 

1. Fry the garlic, shrimp, pork and onions in the butter

2. Add the rice and toss.

3. Add in all other ingredients. Toss together.

4. Finish with butter

5. Oil poach eggs

6. Garnish with egg, chili paste, sesame oil, sesame seeds and scallions
